Continuing To Call Out The Covidiots, Wisconsin Edition
GOP-controlled Wisconsin State Assembly: Another group on the wrong side of history. |
With the Covid pandemic, it's unfortunately a big, huge rogues gallery.
Add the Republican-led Wisconsin State Assembly to the list.
As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday:
"GOP lawmakers in the state Assembly voted Thursday to repeal the statewide mask rule by ending the governor's health emergency health order - the first measure passed by the state Legislature in response to the Covid-19 pandemic in 10 months.
But (Wisconsin Gov. Tony) Evers put the mask requirement back in place almost immediately, saying he was doing so to avoid an unnecessary risk to the public's health. If Evers hadn't acted, the state may have been at risk of losing tens of millions a month in federal food assistance without an emergency order in place."
The Journal Sentinel reported that doctors, hospital administrators, nurses, teachers, dentists, small business leaders and church leaders pleaded for the mask mandates to stay in effect. Such sensible people wanted to preserve public health and preserve consumer confidence by trying to control the pandemic as much as possible.
One survey reported 70 percent of Wisconsin residents support mask mandates. That, in itself, seems like a pretty good mandate for politicians to heed.
However the cult of GOP hates public health mandates because "freedom." To them, the mandate is a tyrannical move that somehow takes power away from them. Sure, the Wisconsin assembly could pass legislation to mandate masks, but it's controlled by the GOP, which would never do that. Because of their vague "freedom" argument.
But what about the public's freedom to stay healthy? You'd think Republicans would love that. Healthy people tend to work and pay taxes. Sick people generally don't.
I also thought Republicans love the free market and commerce. Even healthy people are afraid to go out and shop and spend money when Covid is rampant. Why do you think we're in such a deep recession.
Take away Covid, people go out and spend money, which creates jobs, which makes people spend more money, create even more jobs, etc. Do Republicans no longer enjoy a robust economy?
Republicans are also afraid of the monster they created. For years, decades even, they riled up their "base" to make them furious, paranoid, conspiratorial, even delusion. That kept them under control. Now, that monster is out of control. Piss off the monster, get primaried by a right wing radical/QAnon type in the next election.
Better for the GOP o pretend to believe the garbage they've been spewing. Just to save their jobs. Not exactly profiles in courage, huh?
